What is Codice Fiscale?

Codice Fiscale, also known as CF, is the Italian Tax Number comprising 16 alphanumeric characters (letters and numbers). It is issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate, the country's revenue agency.

Unlike in many countries, the Italian Codice Fiscale is not a random number. It is defined according to the individual's (Anagrafe) registration data, according to the name, surname, date of birth, place of birth, and gender.

HOW IS YOUR FISCAL CODICE DEFINED?

The CF is unique for each individual, formed from the following information, in this order:

- Last name

- Name

- Year of birth

- Month of birth - in the case of women, 40 must be added to the day of birth - ex. a woman born on the 20th - the day indicated in the CF will be 60)

- Birthday

- Birthplace

Your CF will be defined as follows:

3 first consonants of last name + 3 first consonants of first name + year of birth in two digits + month of birth indicated by a predetermined letter of the alphabet + day of birth in two numbers + code of place of birth + a final confirmation character.

Example:

Name: Giuseppe - GSP

Last name: Garibaldi - GRB

Year of birth: 1975 - 75

Month of birth: January - A (A - January; B - February; C - March; D - April; E - May; H - June; L - July; M - August; P - September; R - October; S - November; T - December)

Day of birth: 22 - 22

Place of birth: Rovigo - H620 - see the list of country codes (born abroad) and Comune (born in Italy) here.

In the example above, the CF will be GSPGRB75A22H620# (the last character here identified as # is part of a mathematical calculation from the previous 15 characters. You can read more about this on this website in Italian).

WHAT IS THE FISCAL CODE USED FOR?

CF is necessary for almost everything in Italy. Italians residing abroad do not use CF much, but with the arrival of SPID, this scenario should change.

SPID is the Italian digital identity and will be used for digital access to almost all public services. Read more about SPID here. Soon access to FAST-IT will be exclusive by SPID. To create your SPID you will need to have your CF.

HOW TO ISSUE THE CODICE FISCALE

The issuance of the CF varies according to your residence. If you live outside Italy, you must request the issuance to the Consulate/Embassy where your AIRE is registered. If you reside in Italy, you can issue it at the Post Office or the nearest Agenzia delle Entrate.

BE AWARE

As described at the beginning of the post, the numbering of the CF does not depend on the issuance of the document. In some situations, you will find a Tax Code assigned to you in your Fast-IT registration or other systems. This is because the system itself has the ability to fill in your CF from your registration data. HOWEVER, THIS DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT YOUR CF HAS BEEN ISSUED BY AGENZIA DELLE ENTRATE.

If you have never applied for your CF, be sure to do so. Upon being issued, you will receive a CF Certificate or a CF card that proves your registration.
