7. Register on SPID

Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale - SPID - is a digital identity system (similar to SingPass in Singapore). Through SPID you will be able to access with a single login and password the most diverse systems of Italian public services such as Fast-It, Anagrafe Nazionale Popolazione Residente ANPR, and Agenzia delle Entrate, among others. Soon the SPID will be required to log in to many of these services.

SPID is a free service, but registration may be charged depending on the service provider you choose to authenticate your registration. In this post, I share the step-by-step process for registering a SPID through Poste Italiane (PosteID) which provides SPID completely free of charge to Italian citizens.

UPDATE 11/7/21: It was reported that Poste Italiane (Italy Post Office) will now charge 12 Euros for SPID activation in person at the Italy branch. UPDATE ON 12/3/21: Poste Italiane started charging 10 Euros for activation of those who use the Passport and do not have the Carta D'Identità with PIN.

STEP BY STEP TO REGISTER THE SPID POSTE ID

The PosteID process is easy and requires you to have:

- Codice Fiscale (the tessera - card - or the certificate)

- Mobile phone with NFC reader enabled (Android phones normally need to enable NFC before the procedure)

——

1. Have your Passport and Codice Fiscale ready

2. Download the PosteID app (Android | iOS)

3. Follow the PosteID registration steps. You will need to create an account. Keep the password.

4. The PosteID app will ask you to read the passport data via NFC, that is, you just need to put your cell phone on the Passport cover when you reach this step.

5. The app will also ask you to take a picture holding your passport, and then record a video speaking a phrase in Italian. The phrase appears on the screen and you just have to read it to the camera.

6. Then the app will ask you to photograph the Codice Fiscale.

7. Once the registration is completed, your data will be verified by PosteID. It takes about 5 days for you to receive an approving email response.

8. Once the registration is approved, you log into the app with the password you created before and that's it. Reading the QR Code will be enabled you to log in to public services.

9. To access Fast-IT or any other public system with SPID, you sign in and select log in with SPID. Select the SPID you have (in this case the PosteID).

ATTENTION: The creation of the Poste ID user requires the validation of a code received by SMS. It is very common not to receive an SMS if your cell phone is not from Italy. In Brazil, apparently, only Vivo cell phones receive SMS normally. If you are unable to receive the SMS at all, you will need to file a complaint with Poste ID. Use this link to file your complaint, which must be written in Italian. Later I will add an Italian text template here.
