6. Carta d'Identità - Italian ID
The Italian Identity Card is an official identification document valid for 10 years. It is issued only in Italy or at Italian Consulates in the European Union. There is still no forecast for issuing identity cards in other Consulates.
The most modern model is the Carta d'Identità Eletrônica, which allows digital authentication on public administration websites. Italians residing abroad who do not have CI can use the SPID service for digital authentication.
The CI application is made directly to the Comune of residence in Italy. Scheduling is done through an Italian national website. For more information, visit the official website of the CIE.
CARTA D'IDENTITÀ FOR ITALIAN RESIDENTS ABROAD, REGISTERED IN AIRE
Italians registered with the AIRE can apply for the ID on printed paper, at the AIRE registration municipality, provided that they are in person. See your Comune website for instructions.
