5. Issue your Tax Code - Codice Fiscale

The Codice Fiscale (CF) is the Italian Tax Number. Although not required for use abroad, it is one of the most important documents for your access to government services in Italy. Without Codice Fiscale, it is impossible to register the SPID (for those in Singapore, the SPID is the Italian SingPass).

In addition, the Codice Fiscale is also used as a database on various sites in Italy and is necessary for acquiring real estate, for example. Simply issuing the Codice Fiscale does not make you a tax resident in Italy, so you will not pay Income Tax in Italy just because you have the CF.

Every Consulate does the issuance of the CF, and it is a relatively simple process. The Consulate registers with the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Federal Revenue) and issues the Codice Fiscale Certificate on a paper. This certificate will already contain the number of your CF and is enough for those abroad. You can also request the CF card sent to the Consulate for later collection.

Soon it will be mandatory to use the SPID to access Fast-It, and in order to register the SPID you will need the Codice Fiscale. So if you don't have it yet, don't wait until the last minute to request it.

If your Consulate does not have clear instructions for issuing the CF, fill out this form and send it by email with a copy of your passport to your Consulate.
