2. AIRE's completion

AIRE is the register of Italians residing abroad. It must be requested from the Consulate responsible for your region of residence and is managed in Italy by a Comune. Without AIRE registration, your consular services may be limited, preventing the issuance of passports, for example. You can find more details on the Italian Embassy in Singapore page.

Once the AIRE request is submitted, the Consulate will file a registration request with the Comune responsible for your registration. It could be your last Comune of residence in Italy (if any) or the Comune of registration of the Birth Certificate (if you have never lived in Italy), or even the Comune of birth registration of the spouse (if Italian).

Please note that the registration is carried out at the Comune and not at the Consulate and this procedure can take days, months or years, depending on the efficiency of the Italian Comune. However, some Consulates already accept the application for registration to start providing services to Italians abroad. Again, unfortunately, each case is different.

I recommend that you monitor the effectiveness of your registration by consulting your registration data on the Fast-It portal (I will talk more about this portal in another post) or the ANPR portal. If, after a few months, your AIRE has not been registered, contact Comune to request the process to be expedited.
